Taro Watanabe Qualifies for Challenger Series - Ranked #1 North America 2022.
Here we are about to enter into next year. I sure hope 22 is better than 21, I miss my friends abroad dearly, but that's another story. So, with all the posts about the surfers that have recently qualified, I thought it would be cool to post something many people aren't aware of. Taro Watanabe is too humble to post this, but I am very proud that, at 19 years old, he ended up with the number one ranking for the North American region of the WSL. It sets him up to be in the challenger series for 22, which is the way to qualify.
Many of you know that Taro has been my student for a long time, 8 1/2 years to be exact. Since he was very young, conversations on being the very best were a part of his training. He has shown himself hungry to win and interested in improving from the beginning. I have come to know that quality is something nobody can teach, and it is either there or not. What makes Taro such a champion is that he is aware of his weakness' and is unafraid to talk to me about them. You may see in his surfing that his interest lies in the stylish surfing of yesteryear. Every time I've shown him something from the past, and it could be from the '50s, early '60s, or 70's he digs it. He also likes the power surfing of the late '90s and early 2000s. Keep an eye out for Taro. He still has a ton to learn, but his talent is undeniable.
Thank you to @acinflex
