MID YEAR CUT & GERR'S THOUGHTS - BY JAMIE TIERNEY

MID YEAR CUT & GERR'S THOUGHTS - BY JAMIE TIERNEY
Much of the talk at Bells centered around the upcoming mid-year cut of the surfers on tour. At the conclusion of the Margaret River event, the men will be cut to the top 22 surfers and the women will be reduced to 10. A petition was signed by more than half of them to try and stop the cull, but the effort failed. The reason for the change mainly centers around the difficulty of getting good waves during an event window with the large number of surfers on tour. Many heats ran at Bells and Winkipop in shoddy conditions, including the final day. “I like the cut a lot,” said Brad.  “It’s about time. The whole tour is buttering each other’s bread and people need to figure out what they’re doing wrong and how to improve. I watched a lot of footage of surfers warming up and the overall level isn’t as high as it should be.”

The first contest featuring the smaller roster of tour surfers will be at the amazing wave of G-land in Indonesia and should be more fun to watch.
